Why I use Coupon Envelopes

Many people use coupon binders.  I have never gotten into that trend.  I have always used what I call the envelope style.  I keep all my inserts complete and whole until I need a specific coupon.  THEN and only THEN I cut the coupon and put it into the envelope I am going to use on that day.

WHY?  Perfect example (besides the fact that this way I go into the store with a specific list and don't have to wrestle 3 kids AND a binder) is what happened to me 2 days ago.  I made a quick final Super Doubles run.  I took my 2 daughters, ages 3 and 7.  The 3 year old decided to throw a massive fit in the store.  As the horrid mother that I am we finished our shopping (I was only getting 5 items and we already had 4 in the cart).  As I was checking out, I was so flustered.  But my scenario worked out and all was well on that end.

UNTIL I went to get that envelope to get a catalina I had decided NOT to use on that trip as well as a Lowes Foods Fresh Rewards Coupon (since Lowes was supposed to be my next stop).  I CANNOT FIND IT.  I am seriously grieving here!  The loss of a $5 Fresh rewards and a $3 catalina is NOT the end of the world, but my heart isn't listening!

BUT imagine if that $7 was $500 worth of binder and coupons!   Trust me no matter how honest many people are- it just takes one person to recognize the value of that coupon binder and take it to their car!

Never pay for....

What are some personal care items you should never actually PAY for?  No, I don't mean you should steal them!  I mean using a combination of coupons and rewards, you should never really pay for any of these items (if you can help it)

-toothpaste
-deodorant
-Toothbrushes
-razors
-body wash
-floss
-cough drops
-lotion

Here are some items you should try to pay pennies on the dollar for, if you can't get them free:
-shampoo
-conditioner
-soap
-feminine products
-toilet paper
-makeup

If you are not brand loyal (which is easy to do if you are couponer- buy it on sale WITH a coupon or don't buy it at all!) my rule of thumb is "Can I get this at the dollar store for less than I am paying here?"  For example, they sell Suave or VO5 at the dollar store so if I am going to end up paying more than $1 at the drug store/grocery store I don't buy it!

Some recent deals at pharmacies have resulted in me getting the following for free/virtually free:
-cough medicine (Nyquil/Dayquil/children's medicine)
-cough drops
-Children's vitamins
-Tylenol muscle rub
-Makeup (I got a $18 bottle of face foundation for $1.75 after clearance price and coupons and store rewards!)

Sunday shopping Good and Bad

As always, some trips don't turn out as planned.

TOTAL TRIP:
Value: $198.86
OOP:$21.36
Total Savings: 89.2% + $56.89 in rewards money!

CVS:
Planned OOP: About $1
I purchased:

After Coupons and extra bucks it came out to $.30 + tax (total OOP $1.21)!  AND I got $13.89 in ECB back.
I got 7 Izze's and 2 hair colors

Total Value: $41.37
Savings: 99.3% + 13.89 in ECB

Walgreens:
My plan was just to use $9 or my RR but I ended up using all of them but I was happy because I used my RR to buy 3 more newspapers!

 Planned OOP: $0.15 + tax
I got: 3 News and records
2 Kids vitamins Gummies
2 Oreo Brownies
Bleach
2 8pks of Jergens Soaps
2 T-shirts
2 Breathe right strips
Total Value: $39.03
Total OOP: .65 (plus tax of 2.66 total oop 3.31)
Total Savings: 98% + $10 in RR

Rite Aid:  This was my boo-boo!  I don't know WHAT happened.  My total was to have an OOP of of $3.66. (no picture here my phone has run out of memory!LOL)
I got:
Hormel Complete
2 Kraft Marshmellows
1 Clean and Clear astringent
3 Aveeno Lotions
2 Aveeno Shampoos
6 Reach Toothbrushes
1 Breathe Right
2 Precise Pain Cream
2 Purex 3 in 1
4 Special K cereals

My total Value: $118.46
Total OOP: $12.26 (including tax 16.84)
Savings: 85.8% + $33 in Up+

Not sure WHAT happened here- tax on this order was $4.58.  The total I came up with was $3.66 + tax so even then it should have only been $8.24.  I know that several items were more than I expected (the aveenos I wanted to buy were out so I had to get some that were more, the clean and clear was a bit more too) But STILL over $100 worth of items for $16 was not bad.

Many times I tell you if a total doesn't come out right DON'T BUY It.  But I chose to buy it because it was things we would use and $16 was still an awesome total!
